A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Prison

a documentary by Bushra Azzouz

Midsummer Night's Dream performed at Two Rivers

We began filming A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Prison on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Two Rivers Correctional Institution, near Umatilla, Oregon. We had permission to film inside the prison eight times. Our last film date was October 9th. Our film crew included, at different times: Bushra Azzouz, Richard Blakeslee, Patrick Williams, Trevor Fife, Jon Beanlands, Aysha Ghazoul, Tom Chamberlain, Brian Yazzi, Jeffrey Richardson, Michael Poulin-Roberson, Mario Garza and Vasiliki Katrivanou.

Bushra and the crew filmed rehearsals and performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, group dialogues and individual interviews with the actors.

We have completed the logging and transcription process, reviewed the multiple hours of footage, categorized and organized the shots and have now begun the editing. We are also gearing up for our next round of fundraising. If you want to get involved in this project, call Johnny at: 503-347-6869. There’s lots to do. We especially need help with fundraising, including possibly hosting a fundraising houseparty.

Only a lucky few were able to see our production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Two Rivers prison, but our film has the potential to reach thousands of people who have never been inside a prison. We hope that the story of Shakespeare's magical play, performed by an all-male cast of prison inmates, will inspire in the viewers a feeling of our common humanity.
